Yesterday I came upon a colony of leafcutter ants (Atta texana) who collectively decided to be berry ants instead.
There was a thick trail of juniper berries they had dropped en route to their nest, whose opening was a carefully engineered ramp that they were dropping berries into so they would *roll down into the nest*.
This was one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. My biocensus buddies (we call ourselves the “Biocensations”) were joking about them getting drunk on gin.
