Any idea what this lil fellow is? I found it in the middle of the night while taking a walk West Texas!

OWLFLY OWLFLY OWLFLY

THEY ARE THE BEST FURRY BOYS

THEY ARE SO GOOD

The one you have is in the Ululodes genus [link to bugguide], which is separated from the other owlflies by their divided eyes. They are closely related to antlions, and their larvae are similar and very strange [link to photos of strange larvae].

These guys are not seen very often, so you should consider yourself blessed. Congratulations!

WOW!!! @nanonaturalist thank you so much for the information!!! I feel so fortunate to have seen this lil friend!!! Wowowowowow divided eyes?! that’s incredible! They truly are the best furry boys!!!

You’re welcome! I love them so much, they are so strange and interesting. The one in my photos had perched on my tomato cage and “camouflaged” himself as a branch. They are nocturnal, so this guy was fast asleep and let me get super close with my microscope without budging. It was an amazing experience.
