THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO ME

I LOVE THIS CICADA

I LOVE I LOVE I LOVE

So gold! So shiny!

Baby’s first steps!!!

Inside the husk

So lovely 😍

After I placed the baby back in the tree, I was the recipient of a very healthy stream of… uh… liquid metabolic waste products? But I was too late, didn’t catch any on video. You just need to trust me there was way more than you’d think could fit in there.

@ashyguysworld asked about the color! Most insects start out soft and pale, then darken as they harden. “Teneral” is the term used for dragonflies that are still pale, not sure if it applies to other insects but the idea is the same. For dragonflies it can take a few days to fully harden and get to their final color!

Cicadas tend to come out looking especially ghostly. The glowing-green color is temporary. I’m not sure exactly what species this one is, but it may be a Scissors Grinder, which looks like this when it’s fully colored:

And yes, they are pretty big! 😀

An update! The species of the molting cicada has been determined: it’s a Resh Cicada (Megatibicen resh). Big deal, who cares, right?

Wrong.

(Scientific names change whenever taxonomy is updated, Tibicen was recently split into two genera: Neotibicen and Megatibicen).

Resh Cicadas are in the top 6 loudest insects in the world. And I caught one naked in the front yard!

😀

Babe’s been making the rounds on the tumblrs so I felt obligated to share on here for those who missed Hot Live Cicada Action last year!

TIME TO SCREAM

Late spring in central Texas, nice and warm, not quite hot enough to melt your shoes, but hot enough to melt everything in your car.

But it’s not summer until…

the trees start screaming!

I have heard some cicadas farther east of me (a different species than I have), but so far, this year has been quiet. So I feel like I have been visited by the Cicada Queen, who has bestowed upon me a great honor: I saw my first cicada before I heard it. She was hiding in the elm that popped up in my yard!

So beautiful and perfect!!!

Superb Dog-day Cicada

@thedaeyoung This species is green! When they have just emerged, they look like a blue-green ghost! I found one (a different species, but same genus) last year [link]:

Cicada shirt fundraiser!

There is a great event coming up for all sorts of people doing nature education projects with young people in Texas. Hey! I do lots of nature education with young people in Texas, I should totally go to this! *looks at ticket prices* Oh…

Help me go anyway! Can’t afford a silly cicada shirt? Then share it with people you can! Same deal as last time—I have to sell 5 for them to print, and the more shirts I sell, the cheaper they are to print, and the more $ that goes to me.

New and improved with NO TYPO in the summary ugh thanks tumblr
