Avian Ink Contest | Travis Audubon:

Hey Austin Peeps! Do you have a sweet birb tattoo? You should enter it into the Travis Audubon Avian Ink contest 😀 I won the contest last year with my Hiroshige-inspired pheasant, and I’m one of the judges this year. Send your photos in to Caley (click the link for her address) by September 7 to be in the running.

^ crappy low-res photo of Vivi the Pheasant

My prize was a gift certificate for a tattoo shop in town, and I’m going to get a cicada… when I have time :X Luckily since I won the contest, I have seen PLENTY of cicadas for inspiration.

That pheasant is gorgeous!  I second the cicada tattoo idea, I got a cicada last year :D.

ooooooooooohhhhhhh niiiiiiiccceeeeeeee

I’m trying to figure out what I want as a chest piece (when I have money again ha ha ha ha). For a while I wanted goldfish. But NOW I’m thinking I want hemipterans. The struggle is real.

Cicada would go on the back of my neck to keep my bumble bee company 😀

@nanonaturalist

Fun story, my kitchen bug zoo situation was driving me insane (will post on that later, but summary is I haven’t had a functioning kitchen in over a year because every surface is covered in bugs and dead leaves), and I was driven by desperation to FINALLY set up an ACTUAL bug room. Put together the workbench last night, and *gasp* I have space for my bug art now!!!

Of course I have cicada art.

So gold! So shiny!

Baby’s first steps!!!

Inside the husk

So lovely 😍

After I placed the baby back in the tree, I was the recipient of a very healthy stream of… uh… liquid metabolic waste products? But I was too late, didn’t catch any on video. You just need to trust me there was way more than you’d think could fit in there.

@ashyguysworld asked about the color! Most insects start out soft and pale, then darken as they harden. “Teneral” is the term used for dragonflies that are still pale, not sure if it applies to other insects but the idea is the same. For dragonflies it can take a few days to fully harden and get to their final color!

Cicadas tend to come out looking especially ghostly. The glowing-green color is temporary. I’m not sure exactly what species this one is, but it may be a Scissors Grinder, which looks like this when it’s fully colored:

And yes, they are pretty big! 😀

An update! The species of the molting cicada has been determined: it’s a Resh Cicada (Megatibicen resh). Big deal, who cares, right?

Wrong.

(Scientific names change whenever taxonomy is updated, Tibicen was recently split into two genera: Neotibicen and Megatibicen).

Resh Cicadas are in the top 6 loudest insects in the world. And I caught one naked in the front yard!

😀

I swear every time I see a cicada it’s a different species. I only know three and I’m posting these here before they’re up on iNat because I love you all. I NEVER GET TO SEE CICADAS AND SUDDENLY THEY’RE ALL OVER ME 😭

July 21, 2018 / First night of Moth Week! but let’s be serious it’s all about the cicadas

Another day, another cicada. I think they love…

Oh right I forgot to mention: the window is closed. The sound you hear is through double-paned glass. These things are so loud they can actually hurt your ears.

@dratinimartini I am indeed so blessed 😭Please enjoy

Cicadas I Have Loved

Posted previously (POST-MOLT GIFSET) here [link]

Cicadas of the world. Top left: The first cicada I ever saw. Auckland, New Zealand in 2007. Top right and bottom photos were two cicadas I saw in Malawi last year (2017).

Some Texan Babes. A couple of these I posted recently. Check them out:
Scissors Grinder comes out of nowhere and lands on my shirt
Little Mesquite Cicada takes a Superb Dog-day Cicada for a pony ride

I obsessively document all my bugs on iNaturalist. Check out all my cicadas here (including their different screams!) [link]

Also, probably worth mentioning I am A BIG FAN OF SCREAMING BUGS

Above: your humble narrator upon receipt of the best shirt ever [link]

@samwisenichols Yes! It’s True! They Are LOUD. Observe Chapter 24 of the University of Florida Book of Insect Records: LOUDEST [link]:

Those are all cicadas. And the “SPL” in the chart is the sound in decibels. The loudest of the loud cicadas average over 105 dB when measured from 50 cm (approx 20 inches away). But how loud is 105 dB anyway? Check out these scales I stole from this website [link] and vandalized with a beautiful Neotibicen <3

Louder than a chainsaw! 😀

Some species of cicada are so loud, you couldn’t take them into a concert or dance club in the EU without breaking the law! Listening to cicadas scream at 20 inches away for less than 4 minutes can result in irreversible hearing damage.

😀
